A PEARL THAT CHANGED A LIFE

By Rev. Richard Burgett

Listening to the radio on my way to visit a church member, I heard of a man who had found a pearl of great price. The man had not been looking for a pearl. He had only been purchasing food. The pearl was inside an oyster. To the man's surprise and delight when he opened that oyster, he saw a marvelous thing, a rare black pear. He took it, washed and cleaned it and had it appraised. To his surprise, the value was over a million dollars, per the report. Just think of it - a million dollar dinner. To say the least, the man was beside himself.

As I thought upon that event, I thought of the Bible story of a man who found a "Pearl of a great price". That story is one of Jesus's kingdom parables found in Matt. 13: 45-46. The description is of a merchant in search of fine pearls, and his discovery of the most valuable pearl is a drama in itself. It's effect upon him caused him to concentrate all his efforts on obtaining it. He sold all he had to gain the "one pearl", the pearl of great value. It was the pearl that changed his life.

Now this radio story tells me of another man, this one of our day, who had just experienced the same type event. It was as if history was repeating itself.

As the merchant in the parable and the man of a week ago had experienced, they both had made a great and surprising discovery. Yet, like them I too had found a great pearl of great value. Some 37 years ago, my pearl was the good news of forgiveness and a new life in Jesus Christ. The effect of discovering this joyful news was overpowering. I left all other interest behind and concentrated in the one goal of living a new life under Christ's gracious rule.

You, too may discover the Pearl of Great Price that can change your life. Money cannot buy this Pearl, the payment was the high price of the Blood of Jesus. Christ paid the price for the "Pearl of Salvation" and He will freely give it, to those who find Him. The worthwhile goal of life is to come to faith in Christ Jesus. The oyster is the Bible, not attractive on the outside, but inside what a valuable treasure awaits.
