RHYMES WITHOUT REASON ON VALENTINE'S DAY

BY SISTER SHIRLEY BATES

Sister Lana Bryant will lead us in an old, old song, "Let me call you sweetheart."

I feel such a sense of love in the air. It makes me think that just maybe it's almost Valentine's day.

What is Valentine's day all about? It is a day set aside in order for us to tell our sweethearts how much they are loved.

Sometimes words come easy for some people but not so for everyone. Valentine's day gives us a chance to show our love to each other in various ways. some say "I love you" with flowers, candy and cards of affection.

Children make valentine's at school for each other.

Teenagers get a chance to let someone they have liked for a long time know it.

Then as we get older we have unctions. You know inspirations to write poems or songs about things that might be going on over at our friends' house on this special Valentine's day. Now some folks just plain forget about it.

Not so at Bro. David and Sister Becky Pennington's house. This is probably what happens over there:

Happy Valentine's day the computer says as Becky smiles with glee.

Brother David left a love note the night before you see.

This Email is the best way to let your lover know

How high tech love has gotten and helped our interest grow.

No longer do they have to speak where they are in their house

They just whisper their sweet nothings to that little mouse.

Over at the Caldwell's, it goes something like this:

Bobby was a bachelor. No one could tame him down.

Valentine's and sweet stuff was not his cup of tea.

Now his house has filled up with women, don't you see.

They tell him when to get up and when to go to bed

Pretty soon they'll tell him the things their mommy said.

They probably sent a Valentine to their daddy dear

And gave him hugs and kisses that will last all year.

At Terra & Sam Goodin's:

From down in southern country came a brave young man

And captured our little Terra's heart. Oh yes, his name is Sam.

He really is from down south where gentlemen are neat

They always send their ladies something really sweet.

"Don't you worry baby", this Mississippi guy

Will love you now and forever until the day he dies.

On the Valentine he gave her was a picture of himself

Eating all her candy, until not a piece was left.

So from the north to the south men are all the same

What they want from all of us is just to change our names.

At Jimmy & Susie Harpers:

You know I talked awhile ago about getting an unction to do things you never did before so this time I put my words to music. It goes like this: (Words are set to music of the old song "Deliverance will come")

There was a fairly young man a riding down the road

He was soon distracted by a young girl carrying a load.

He had his 4 wheeler loaded with all that he could pack

But stopped to greet little Susie and never did look back.

Now Jimmy was a hunter. He hunted night and day

Until the little dear that he caught taught him how to pray.

Now their last name was Harper and harp he always did

Until he found the guitar and learned to play instead.

Now Susie is real happy with her sweetheart at home

He is her's forever never more to roam.

Oh Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy What's left for us to say

But give her hugs & kisses on this very special day.

Bro. Harold is always inviting people over to their house, so let's slip over there.

Bro. Harold, oh Bro. Harold nice as he can be

His Moma said she found him behind an old oak tree.

She taught him to be thoughtful. She taught him to be good.

She taught him to be a sweetheart just the way she should.

Now Elizabeth is his valentine as sweet as pie is she

But don't you know she wishes

Mama had just left him behind that old oak tree!

While we're in that neighborhood, let's walk over to our pastor's house. This is what we saw:

Sis. Carol heard a voice as he came through the door.

Saying, "Sweetie I still love you" Then she replied but "I love you more".

See he has been gone for so long he wouldn't even dare

Return to her without something to show he really cares.

So words of love on St. Valentine's day was such a trivial thing.

He bought roses for her but she wanted a diamond ring.

So let this be a lesson to all of you guys

The longer you're gone the more it costs

Cause memories never die.

At Bro. Lonnie and Sis. Pennington's house:

Oh let's not forget to drop by Bro. Pennington's house

Sometime if you'll notice when passing by their place

You'll hear a burst of laughter and see her smiling face.

That's because he said these words as he came through the door

Words of affection as he has done before:

Scubby, scubby do, I love you.

I'd climb the highest mountain just to be with you.

I'd hook up 220's where 110's belong

Just to hear you sing a sweet love song.

Sing to me so sweetly of how it used to be

When we first fell in love for all the world to see

Read this card so slowly and let it all soak in

Remembering the moment when this all began.

Scubby Scubby Do,

I love you.

You know that unction I talked about before. It really hit me a second time. This again was an unction to write another song. There are always in everyone's life very special friends, friends that you know a little better than other people and you just have to do something besides send them a valentine. All of you have friends like that. Well, I had such deep feeling about this song I wrote I even dedicated it to Sis. Peggy and Bro. Larry. It goes like this:

(Music to Frankie & Johnny Were Lovers)

Peggy and Larry were sweethearts

Oh my how sweet they were

They swore to be true to each other

As true as the stars above

But he done her wrong

Yes he done her wrong.

Valentine's day was important

A rose she expected he'd bring

No candy or card came through the door

Not a ribbon or anything

He was her man but he done her wrong.

Peggy went down to the river

And started to jump in

But suddenly decided to change her mind

And just get even with him.

He was her man

But he done her wrong.

She looked all over the river

To see what she could find

She found this ship upon the beach

And said now "That will be mine"

Cause he done me wrong

Yes he done me wrong.

A card would be so much cheaper

Or flowers would have been so nice.

But since he forgot altogether

He paid an awful price

Yes he done her wrong

Yes he done her wrong.

Now next year he will do better.

A lesson he has learned

Valentine's are so much cheaper

And be sure he'll buy her one.

Cause he done her wrong.

Yes he done her wrong.

Now there has to be forgiveness

For all the things we do.

As hard as it may be for her

She'll still say "I love you".

Though he done her wrong

Yes he done her wrong.

They'll take that boat to the river

And as he goes down that slide

The last thing that his eye will catch

Is his favorite Valentine

Peggy is her name,

And he done her wrong.

This is the song that was written

Especially for my friends

And now that you sweethearts have made up

I'll bring this to an end.

This will be your song.

Forever Amen.
